Living with intention and purpose is a journey that I have been on for several years now. As a young man, I was always rushing from one thing to the next, trying to achieve more, be more, and do more. But as I grew older and wiser (possibly!), I realized that this approach to life was unsustainable and unfulfilling. I was living on autopilot, without a clear sense of direction or purpose.
It was only when I discovered the principles of mindful living that I began to truly awaken to the possibilities of a more considered life. Mindful living isn’t about yoga or meditation; it is all about being intentional with your choices, and it starts with defining your values and priorities. For me, this meant reflecting on what truly mattered to me: my relationships, my health, my creativity, and my contribution to the world.
Once I had a clearer sense of my values, I began to make intentional choices that aligned with them. I started simplifying my life by getting rid of clutter and excess and creating more space for the things that truly brought me joy and fulfillment.
Finding your purpose and living with intention will be different for you than it is for me but the following have helped me along my journey and I hope, can help you too.
01 Discover Your Values and Priorities
Living with intention and purpose starts with discovering your values and priorities. Take some time to reflect on what truly matters to you. What brings you joy and fulfillment? What do you want to achieve in life? Once you have a clearer sense of your values, you can begin to make intentional choices that align with them.
For me, family and relationships are a top priority. I value spending time with loved ones and making meaningful connections with others. This has led me to prioritize things like scheduling regular phone calls with family members who live far away and making time for social events with friends.
Another value of mine is personal growth and learning. I believe in the importance of constantly challenging myself and expanding my knowledge and skills. To align with this value, I prioritize reading books on a regular basis, attending workshops and conferences, and seeking out new experiences that push me out of my comfort zone.
A third value for me is health and wellness. I believe that taking care of my physical and mental health is essential for living a happy and fulfilling life. To align with this value, I prioritize regular exercise and make time for self-care activities like reading and journaling.
02 Simplify Your Life
Clutter and excess can be overwhelming and distracting. By simplifying your life and getting rid of things you don’t need or use, you can create more space and clarity in your mind and home. Start by decluttering your physical space, and then move on to simplifying your schedule and commitments.
While minimalism may have been a bit of a trend a few years ago, I have found that owning fewer possessions not only creates a more peaceful and organized home but also frees up mental space and reduces stress. To align with this value, I have been slowly decluttering my belongings and focusing on only buying things that I truly need or love. This has made me more mindful of my consumption habits and has brought a greater sense of simplicity and ease to my life.
03 Create a Daily Mindfulness Practice
Mindfulness is all about being present in the moment and paying attention to your thoughts and feelings without judgment. A daily mindfulness practice can help you cultivate this awareness and bring more peace and clarity into your life. This could be as simple as taking a few minutes each day to meditate, or simply sit in silence and breathe.
For me, it’s journaling. As someone who struggles with overthinking, I have found that journaling is a powerful tool for cultivating mindfulness and self-awareness. I started this habit after reading Stillness Is The Key (a book I would recommend for those of you interested in spirituality and time-proven examples of how to foster calm for your benefit).
I try to make time each day to sit down with my journal and write out my thoughts and feelings. This helps me to get out of my head and into the present moment, and to gain clarity and perspective on my emotions. I find that writing about my day from a third-person perspective helps me to get out of my own head and remove some of the ego from my thinking. It allows me to track patterns and themes in my thoughts and behaviors, which helps me to identify areas for growth and change.
04 Practice Gratitude
You’ve heard this before and maybe you ignored it seeing it as new-age nonsense but gratitude is a powerful practice that can shift your focus from what’s lacking to what you have.
Take time each day to reflect on the things you’re grateful for, whether it’s your health, your relationships, or simply the beauty of nature. This practice can help you cultivate a more positive and optimistic mindset. Positivity attracts positive things.
Each day, I try to take a few minutes to reflect on the things I am grateful for, whether it’s a sunny day, a good cup of coffee, or a supportive friend. This practice has helped me to cultivate a more positive and optimistic outlook, and has allowed me to appreciate the small joys in life. I have also found that practicing gratitude has made me more resilient and better able to cope with challenges, as I am able to focus on the good even in difficult times.
By incorporating gratitude into my daily routine, I have been able to shift my focus from what’s lacking to what I have. This has brought a greater sense of peace and contentment to my life, and has helped me to attract more positivity and abundance.
05 Connect with Others
Human connection is essential for our well-being. Make time to connect with friends and family, volunteer in your community, or join a group that shares your interests and values. Connecting with others can help you feel more supported, fulfilled, and engaged with the world around you.
In fact, a Harvard Study suggested that relationships are the most important factor in happiness so you’d better pay attention to them.
I have found that making time for friends is crucial for maintaining connections and fostering a sense of community. One way that I do this is by scheduling regular golf outings with a group of friends who share my love for the game. By committing to these outings, I not only get to spend quality time with my friends but also get to enjoy a shared activity that we all love.
06 Stay Committed and Patient
Living with intention and purpose is a journey, not a destination. It takes time and commitment to cultivate mindfulness and create a more considered life. Be patient with yourself and stay committed to your values and priorities. Remember that every step you take towards living with intention and purpose is a step towards a more fulfilling and meaningful life.
As an “entrepreneur”, I have learned the importance of staying committed and patient when it comes to building a successful business. It takes time to build a customer base, and establish yourself in your industry. By staying committed to my vision and being patient with the process, I have been lucky enough to experience some success.

07 Set Goals and Take Action
Living with intention and purpose involves setting goals and taking action towards achieving them. Identify the things you want to accomplish in your life, and create a plan to make them happen. This could include setting career goals, improving your health and fitness, or pursuing a new hobby or passion.
As a co-founder of this blog, I set goals for the type of content I want to publish, and the impact I want to have. I don’t always reach those goals, but I still believe that setting them is important. It helps me to stay focused and motivated, and it gives me a sense of direction and purpose.
For instance, I set a goal to publish at least three blog posts per week on this site. Although I sometimes struggle to find the time or inspiration to write, having this goal in mind keeps me accountable and ensures that I consistently produce content for my readers. Sometimes, all you need is to do is start.
If you’re looking to live with intention and purpose, I encourage you to set goals and take action towards achieving them. Remember that the process is just as important as the outcome, and that even if you don’t always reach your goals, the simple act of striving towards them can bring meaning and fulfillment to your life.
08 Practice Self-Care
Taking care of yourself is crucial for living with intention and purpose. Make time for activities that nourish your mind, body, and soul, such as exercise, meditation, or reading. Remember to prioritize rest and relaxation, and take breaks when you need them.
If you are a regular reader you might have guessed that golf is my favorite sport; I try to practice it at least once a week. It helps me to clear my mind and relax after a busy week. Even when I have a lot on my plate, I try to make time for golf because it’s something that brings me joy and fulfillment.
Reading is another one of my favorite ways to unwind and relax. Even when my schedule is packed, I try to make time for reading at least a few pages before bed. I find that it helps me to quiet my mind and reduce stress, which ultimately helps me to sleep better and wake up feeling refreshed.
What you do will be different but remember to make time for self care.
09 Embrace Imperfection
Living with intention and purpose doesn’t mean striving for perfection. It’s important to embrace your imperfections and accept that mistakes and setbacks are a natural part of the journey. Learn from your failures and use them as an opportunity to grow and improve.
Embracing imperfection has been a powerful lesson for me in my personal and professional life. As an entrepreneur, I’ve had to accept that not every idea or venture will be successful, but it’s important to learn from those experiences and keep moving forward.
In my personal life, I’ve learned to accept that I’m not always going to be the perfect friend, partner, or family member, but I can always strive to be better and show up for the people I care about.
